Sweet Fix - Banana 'Ice Cream'
Anyone else think ice cream ought to be a food group of its
own?
I can happily devour a tub of Ben & Jerry’s – Phish
Food, in case you’re wondering – and whilst I’m on cloud nine spoon in hand, a
short time after it’s all gone I rapidly come tumbling back down to Earth both
in terms of the inevitable sugar crash and the feelings of guilt having spied
the nutritional contents! J and I can reluctantly share a whole tub of
the stuff, that’s a HUGE 675 kcal and 70g sugar!! Current UK government
guidelines recommend no more than 30g added
sugar and no more than 90g total sugar
per day which, when you consider it like that, doesn’t make the half tub of
chocolatey goodness seem quite so appealing.
Enter banana ‘ice cream’ or ‘nana nice cream’ as I like to
call it. Now, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past year, you’ll
have been witness to the takeover of these melting mountains on your Instagram
feed. Coming in an array of bright colours with a plethora of toppings to suit
your mood, this is the go-to sweet fix to replace those delicious yet
tooth-decaying delights of commercial ice creams. And it’s so simple to make!
Merely take a bunch of ripe bananas, peel and roughly chop then stash in the
freezer to keep on hand and blitz up when you’re hit with the late night
munchies.
The freezing element seems to dampen the taste of banana
slightly so you can add whatever flavourings you feel like; my favourite is raw
cacao and peanut butter though if I’m feeling fruity I’ll add frozen
raspberries and top with a little toasted coconut for crunch. The possibilities
are endless and, in my opinion, you can't really go wrong. So next time you hear those sugar demons calling out for ice cream
don’t run for your car keys whilst Googling the opening hours of your nearest
late-night store, take a stroll to the cupboard, fish out your blender and get
concocting a healthy, delicious nana nice cream to enjoy without guilt!
